What is rattan?
Rattan is a strong yet lightweight and flexible material made from the rattan plant’s stem. It can be used both whole and split into thinner materials that are braided into things like furniture and baskets. Rattan belongs to the palm family and climbs along trees, though no trees are required to be felled when the rattan cane is harvested. Since it is a natural material and the products are often handmade by skilled craftspeople, each object gets a completely unique look.
Designer Andreas Fredriksson
"When I designed SALNÖ armchair, I wanted to keep the beauty and traditional braiding of rattan and combine it all with our DNA – the flat package. Every part is still created by hand, every angle is thoroughly calculated and every rattan cane in the seat and back is adapted to give you the best possible comfort. Yet in the end, you are the one who puts the parts together into a complete armchair – created by nature, refined by skilled hands and completely unique.”
Invite nature into your home with rattan
Rattan is a living material with a will of its own. It has to be boiled and sun-dried before it can be tamed into different shapes that we can sit on, rest in, or decorate our homes with. That’s why we work together with experienced artisans that help to shape the rattan vines to functional products. The cooperation means you can have unique and handmade furniture in your own home – created by man and nature together.
SALNÖ armchair – the best of two worlds
Rattan furniture is perfect when you want a warm and welcoming feel at home. However, they are often sold pre-assembled and can be difficult to transport. It’s something we wanted to change with SALNÖ rattan armchair. Since it is both handmade and machine-made, we can fit this curvy piece of furniture in a flat package. It means you have to assemble it yourself, but it also makes SALNÖ easier to transport – all the way from the artisans to your home.
